Canada FPT Deposit Explained: Easy 2026 Payment Guide

A Canada FPT deposit is a payment from the Canada Revenue Agency, and the letters stand for Federal, Provincial, Territorial. Banks use the code for tax credits the CRA pays out on behalf of the federal and provincial governments, most often the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (the renamed GST/HST credit), the Canada Child Benefit, or a provincial credit paid alongside them.

Quick answer: a Canada FPT deposit is money from the CRA, not a mistake and not taxable. In 2026 the most common source is the quarterly Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, paid January 5, April 2, July 3, and October 5, worth up to $679 a year for a single person after the 25% increase that took effect in July 2026.

What a Canada FPT Deposit Is

Canada FPT is the bank statement code the CRA uses when it pays combined Federal, Provincial, and Territorial tax credits into your account. Your bank may display it as Canada FPT, FPT Canada, Fed Prov/Terr Canada, or a similar variation, but every version means the same thing: a government benefit you qualified for through your tax return.

The code exists because the CRA delivers many different credits through one payment system. Rather than naming each program on your statement, the deposit arrives under the umbrella label, which is why a Canada FPT deposit confuses so many people the first time it appears.

The important part: you did not apply for anything by accident, and nobody sent money to the wrong account. The CRA calculated that you qualify based on the income, marital status, and children on your latest tax return, then paid you automatically.

Why You Got a Canada FPT Deposit

A Canada FPT deposit almost always comes from one of three sources. Which one applies to you depends on your family situation and your province:

  • The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB). The renamed GST/HST credit, paid quarterly to people with low and modest incomes. This is the most common source of the code for adults without children.
  • The Canada Child Benefit (CCB). The monthly payment for families with children under 18. Many banks label CCB deposits Canada CCB, but some show them as Canada FPT instead.
  • Provincial or territorial credits. Programs such as the BC climate action tax credit or the BC family benefit are paid by the CRA together with the federal credits, and they ride under the same code.

Timing is the fastest clue. A Canada FPT deposit that lands in the first week of January, April, July, or October is almost certainly the Groceries and Essentials Benefit. One that arrives around the 20th of the month is usually child benefit money.

The GST Credit Is Now the Groceries and Essentials Benefit

The GST/HST credit was renamed the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit on July 3, 2026, with a 25% increase to the benefit amount that will stay in place for five years, from 2026 to 2031. If your Canada FPT deposit got bigger this summer, that increase is why.

The government also issued a one time top up on June 5, 2026 equal to 50% of your 2025 to 2026 GST/HST credit entitlement. That extra spring payment surprised a lot of people, and it also arrived under the FPT code at many banks.

Eligibility did not change with the rename. You still qualify automatically by filing your tax return, the income thresholds still work the same way, and payments are still quarterly. The full program rules live on the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit page at canada.ca. Our GST/HST credit guide covers the program the code replaced.

Canada FPT Deposit Dates for 2026

Canada FPT deposit dates follow the schedule of whichever benefit is being paid. The two calendars that matter to most households in 2026 are the quarterly Groceries and Essentials Benefit and the monthly Canada Child Benefit:

2026 quarterGroceries and Essentials Benefit
Q1January 5, 2026
Q2April 2, 2026
Q3July 3, 2026
Q4October 5, 2026

The January and April payments were issued under the old GST/HST credit name, and the July and October payments under the new one. Either way they can appear as a Canada FPT deposit on your statement.

The Canada Child Benefit pays monthly: January 20, February 20, March 20, April 20, May 20, June 19, July 20, August 20, September 18, October 20, November 20, and December 11 in 2026. The official benefits payment calendar at canada.ca lists every program’s dates in one place, and our own benefit payment dates calendar lines them up against CPP, OAS, and the provincial programs.

Provincial credits paid with the federal ones, like the BC climate action tax credit, land on the same quarterly dates, which is why one Canada FPT deposit can be larger than the federal amount alone.

How Much the Deposits Are Worth

For the July 2026 to June 2027 payment year, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit pays up to $679 for a single person, $890 for a couple, and $234 for each child under 19, based on your 2025 tax return. Divide by four for the quarterly amount: a single person’s maximum works out to about $170 per quarter.

HouseholdAnnual maximumPer quarterly payment
Single person$679About $170
Couple$890About $222
Each child under 19$234About $58

The amounts shrink as your adjusted family net income rises, so most people receive less than the maximum and higher earners receive nothing. If the amount per quarter would be under $50, the CRA pays the whole year in one lump sum in July, which produces a single larger Canada FPT deposit instead of four small ones.

The Canada Child Benefit is much larger, up to several hundred dollars per child per month, and it is recalculated every July from the previous year’s return. A mid sized Canada FPT deposit around the 20th of the month is usually CCB money for one or more children.

How to Tell Which Benefit You Were Paid

The definitive answer is in your CRA account, which shows every benefit payment with its program name, date, and amount. Sign in, open Benefits and credits, and match the payment to the deposit in your bank account.

If you prefer the fast route, use these three checks in order:

  • Match the date. First week of January, April, July, or October points to the Groceries and Essentials Benefit. Around the 20th points to the CCB.
  • Match the amount. Quarterly maximums are about $170 single or $222 for a couple, plus $58 per child. Anything much larger on a quarterly date likely includes a provincial credit.
  • Check your CRA mail. The CRA sends a notice each July showing your annual entitlement and the schedule for your payments.

Once you know which program is paying you, put its dates in your phone. A Canada FPT deposit is much more useful when you can plan around it instead of being surprised by it.

Is It Taxable, and Can You Keep It?

No, a Canada FPT deposit is not taxable. The Groceries and Essentials Benefit, the GST/HST credit before it, the Canada Child Benefit, and the provincial credits paid with them are all tax free. You do not report them as income, and they do not reduce any other benefit you receive.

You can also keep it, with one caveat. If the CRA later reassesses your return and decides you were overpaid, it will ask for the difference back, usually by reducing future payments rather than demanding a lump sum. That is rare and it comes with a notice explaining the math. Money you were genuinely entitled to is yours, full stop.

One planning note: because these credits are recalculated from each year’s tax return, filing on time every spring is what keeps the deposits coming. Miss a return and the payments stop until you file, then arrive as retroactive lump sums afterwards.

Newcomers to Canada are the exception to the file-first rule. In your first year, before you have a Canadian tax return on record, you apply directly with a short CRA form for the benefit and credits, and your spouse’s information counts too. Once that first return is filed the following spring, everything switches to automatic like it is for everyone else.

Keep your banking details current as well. If you close the account the CRA has on file, payments bounce back and sit in limbo until you update your direct deposit information, which takes minutes in your CRA account and saves weeks of waiting on a replacement payment.

When the Deposit Is Unexpected

An unexpected Canada FPT deposit usually has a boring explanation. The most common ones in 2026:

  • The June 5 top up. The one time 50% Groceries and Essentials top up was paid outside the normal quarterly rhythm, so it looked like a mystery payment.
  • You just became eligible. Turning 19, a drop in income, a new child, or a change in marital status can all start payments automatically.
  • A retroactive payment. If you filed late or the CRA reassessed an earlier year, missed quarters arrive together in one deposit.
  • A provincial credit joined in. Moving provinces can add a credit you have never received before to the same payment.

Verify anything unexpected in your CRA account before spending it. If the account shows no matching benefit payment and the deposit is genuinely unexplained, call the CRA at 1-800-387-1193 rather than assuming it is free money. Deposits made in error can be recalled.

One thing an unexpected government deposit is not: a reason to relax about the rest of the month. If a surprise $170 matters to your budget, your credit file deserves the same attention. A free credit assessment from FixMyCredit.ca is a no pressure way to see where you stand, whatever your income source.

FPT vs FED, PRO, and Other Deposit Codes

The CRA uses several statement codes, and each points to a different family of payments. Here is how a Canada FPT deposit compares to the codes it gets confused with:

Statement codeWhat it usually is
Canada FPTGroceries and Essentials Benefit (ex GST credit), CCB, or provincial credits paid with them
Canada FEDFederal only payments, often the CCB or federal credits, depending on the bank
Canada PROProvincial programs like the Ontario Trillium Benefit or Alberta child and family benefit
Canada RITA tax refund, Refund of Income Tax, after an assessment or reassessment
Canada CCBThe Canada Child Benefit under its own label

Banks are not consistent with each other, which is why the same CCB payment can show as three different codes at three different banks. Our guides to the Canada FED deposit and the Canada PRO deposit break down those two codes the same way this page does for FPT.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Canada FPT Deposit

What is a Canada FPT deposit?

It is a payment from the Canada Revenue Agency under the Federal, Provincial, Territorial code. It covers tax credits you qualified for automatically through your tax return, most commonly the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, the Canada Child Benefit, or a provincial credit paid alongside them.

Why did I get a Canada FPT deposit today?

Check the date against the 2026 calendars. Quarterly payments landed January 5 and April 2 and continue July 3 and October 5, and CCB payments arrive around the 20th of each month. A payment outside those windows is usually retroactive, the June 5 top up, or a recalculation after your return was assessed.

Is the Canada FPT deposit taxable?

No. Every credit paid under the code is tax free. You do not report it as income on your return, and receiving it does not reduce your other benefits.

How much is the Canada FPT deposit in 2026?

If it is the Groceries and Essentials Benefit, the maximum for July 2026 to June 2027 is $679 a year for a single person, $890 for a couple, and $234 per child under 19, paid quarterly. Amounts fall as income rises, so your deposit may be smaller.

Do I need to apply to get it?

No. Filing your tax return every year is the application. The CRA calculates your entitlement from the return automatically, including the provincial credits, and new residents of Canada use a short CRA form to start.

Why did my deposit get bigger in July 2026?

The GST/HST credit became the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit on July 3, 2026 with a 25% increase that runs to 2031. There was also a one time top up on June 5, 2026 worth 50% of the previous year’s credit.

What is the difference between Canada FPT and Canada FED?

FPT covers combined federal and provincial credit payments, while FED is used for federal only payments. In practice banks apply the codes inconsistently, so confirm the program in your CRA account rather than relying on the label.

Can the CRA take a Canada FPT deposit back?

Only if a reassessment shows you were overpaid, and normally by reducing future payments rather than a demand letter. Payments you were entitled to are yours to keep.

The Bottom Line on the Canada FPT Deposit

A Canada FPT deposit is good news wearing a confusing name: a tax free credit the CRA calculated for you automatically. In 2026 it is most often the upgraded Groceries and Essentials Benefit on its quarterly dates, or child benefit money around the 20th. Confirm the program in your CRA account, put the dates in your calendar, and keep filing on time so the deposits never stop. For every other code and calendar, our master benefit payment dates guide has the full year mapped out.
